An original first-generation Herman Miller Aeron chair, manufactured in May 2000. The factory-dated label is shown in the photos. Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick designed the Aeron in 1994, and it broke every convention in office seating. Instead of foam and upholstery, it uses a breathable woven suspension called Pellicle. The design was added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art almost immediately after its release. This example dates from the chair’s cultural peak. In 2000 the Aeron was the defining object of the dot-com era, a status symbol in offices from Silicon Valley to Manhattan. Herman Miller retired this original design in 2016 in favor of a redesigned “Remastered” version. Original Classics like this one are no longer produced. The deep wine-colored Pellicle is a distinctive departure from the ubiquitous black and graphite, and it is set against a graphite frame and base. After 26 years the chair remains perfectly functional, a testament to the build quality that made the Aeron a design landmark. Fully loaded Size B configuration. Tilt limiter with forward seat-angle adjustment. Fully adjustable arms (height and pivot). Adjustable lumbar support pad. Pneumatic seat height and tilt tension adjustment. Maker: Herman Miller. Designers: Bill Stumpf & Don Chadwick. Materials: Pellicle mesh, glass-reinforced polyester, aluminum, steel. Total Height: Adjusts from 38″ to 42″. Seat Height: Adjusts from 16″ to 20″. Seat Width: 19.5. A highly functional work of art.
