Genuine Herman Miller Aeron arm bolt
This kit features the genuine Herman Miller button socket head cap screw (bolt) and the genuine Herman Miller un-threaded nylon jam nut. Buyers also get two required tools, two installation aids and instructions that are so well written that installation success is guaranteed. This listing also provides useful information for buyers who want to understand why their arm detached; and, the superior aftermarket options I offer to reattach it. Everyone who owns a car has a cost-saving, aftermarket oil filter. If the threads and gasket on the oil filter fit the mounting points on your engine, you trust it will work. My aftermarket bolt kits feature… The following chairs and situations ARE compatible with this kit All buyers with compatible chairs are asked to read the information in purple text below. Aeron chairs that use rotating thumb wheels as shown in the 2nd photograph AND, The owner has the outer slide bearing shown in the 3rd photograph. Aeron chairs that have thumb wheel adjusted arms that fail to cinch when tightening. This results in an arm that will not support any weight without falling to the bottom of the adjustment slot. Buyers can reuse their existing bolt and consume only the nylon nut to fix this issue. The following chairs and situations are NOT compatible with this kit Chairs that have lever locking height adjusters Chairs with fixed height (non-adjustable) arms Owners who want to convert fixed height arms to adjustable arms The Aeron side chair Chairs with one or both arms broken prior to acquisition have a 99.9999% probability of lost outer slide bearings. Please compare your detached arm to the series of photographs in the 3rd image. 100% of installations that proceed without the outer slide bearing fail. There aren’t any “special” chairs or arms; every adjustable arm needs this bearing. Resellers sometimes omit this critical part to cut costs. In my humble opinion, the biggest drawback of this bolt is the T-27 Torx drive socket hole in the head. Less than 5% of buyers who are looking at this listing expected their arm to break when it did. If you sat on your arm; or, if your teenager fell on it while horsing around, you are in this group. That leaves 95% plus who are in disbelief that a seeming small load placed on their arm caused it to break. Button socket head cap screws aren’t intended for use where head strength is critical. The cantilever attachment the Aeron chair arm makes it a 2nd class lever with a mechanical advantage of 8 to 1. A 50 pound load on the outer tip of the arm multiplies to 400 pounds of force pulling on the bolt head. No surprise, 99% of these bolts fail when the head detaches from the shaft. Buyers can validate if their bolt broke in this location by inspecting the bolt shaft coming out of their arm. Magnify the tip and, you should see a dimple in the middle. That comparatively smooth, concave area is the bottom of the T-27 socket hole. The doughnut-shaped ring of grainy metal outside the dimple was holding the head to the shaft. The drawing in the 5th photograph highlights the inherent weakness of the button socket head design. The left side of the drawing shows approximately how deep the T-27 Torx socket hole is in the head. The drawing also shows how large the diameter of the hole is in relation to the diameter of the shaft. The right side of this drawing shows how the break angles into the socket hole. Above the drawing is a failed, genuine Herman Miller button socket head cap screw (bolt). If your arms gradually drift to the bottom of the adjustment slot over a 10 to 14 day time frame, they will continue to do so. Two of the redundant parts are labeled bearings. New bearings reduce friction more effectively than used bearings. It is NOT possible to install this bolt without installing both bearings. Many buyers use a broken arm as a catalyst to upgrade their chairs using my no-slip T-slot bolts. The bolt encounters excess resistance as it cuts threads into the new, unthreaded nylon jam nut. About the 5mm hex key This is the correct size wrench to remove the the chair back screws. Use of a substitute 3/16 hex tool can result in stripped flats inside these screw heads. About the grayed-out parts in the 4th photograph As the photograph clearly indicates, they aren’t included in this broken-bolt repair kit. Buyers of this kit need to validate that they have all of these to take advantage of this “thin” kit. This item is in the category “Business & Industrial\Office\Office Furniture\Chairs & Stools”.
